Welcome!
My name is Jeremy Ryan and I am running as an Independent for Wisconsin's 76th Assembly District. I believe Wisconsin needs a progressive and indpendent voice in the Assembly. I strongly believe that if you want change you need to be the change you want to see. For this reason, I decided to run. Make no mistake, this is not your ordinary campaign. I think we are all tired of politics as usual. I am running to try to lead by example and change the system through action.
In the beginning of my campaign it was decided I would create a "Clean Funding Pledge". I feel that this is extremely important. Since the Citizens United ruling, special interests have taken control of politicians on all levels. It is not enough, however, to want Citizens United removed. You have to SHOW it. That is why I started off my campaign by signing the clean funding pledge I created which can be found here. I was sickened by candidates in other states claiming to sign off to clean funding but not taking out all special interests. They may turn down corporate money, but the issue is far beyond that. In order to create real change we must turn down ALL special interest money. All PACS. All conduits. All corporations. And all unions. PERIOD. If you don't live and you don't breathe you cannot contribute. Also, I will accept no contributions over $100. Its time to walk the walk.
I also feel that we need to get back to the Constitution. Over the past year and a half, I have been doing a number of protest related activities. I was also the most arrested person in the Capitol struggle having been arrested over 32 times, all but two being dismissed as unconstitutional arrests. I have put my entire life on the line fighting for constitutional compliance. Almost every single arrest was due to silently filming or holding a sign. Due to the arrests I and others received, the meetings were no longer open. The first step to moving forward is rolling everything passed in the last year, and I mean everything, backwards. The GOP did not allow the process to work. Bill after bill was rushed through and every attempt was made to avoid transparency. These laws should not be able to be enacted to begin with, they were not legally passed. They can then add items back and allow the process and transparency.
Above free speech, however, comes the first right in the Wisconsin State Constitution. This is the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are also guaranteed federally by the Declaration of Independence. In Slinger, Wisconsin, Bo Morrison was killed for being on his porch. The killer, Adam Kind, now runs free. The Washington County DA has said that Bo's death was justified under self defense laws and the Castle Doctrine and therefore Kind would never see a jury. The fact is, however, that DA Benson is simply incompetent and not very knowledgable on these laws. Self defense laws require equal or lesser force. Bo was unarmed.
But rather than remove himself from the case after not even knowing the self defense laws (therefore unable to make a decision), he chose to keep as much silent as possible. He attempted to hide the 911 call for almost two months. In Wisconsin, we cannot take a person's life or liberty without a trial, even then we can only take liberty. Bo lost his life and liberty for nothing more than a potential municipal ordinance violation. We need to remove the unconstitutional Castle Doctrine and create some laws so that incompetent DA's can be removed if their published facts on the law are substantially false as his was to say it fit under self defense.
Beyond that I have a number of initiatives including legalization of marijuana, real campaign finance reform, putting legislators on Medicaid, and securing our elections. The time is now for an independent voice in the 76th Assembly District. The time is now to be the change we want to see!
Sincerely yours,
Jeremy Ryan
